Anthropic's updated Usage Policy takes effect on November 12, 2026. In the section called "Do Not Engage in Cruel, Abusive, or Psychologically Harmful Conduct", it now lists "sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models". That is the whole rule, and it is short.

Here is the rule as written, what it leaves open, and what can happen to an account.

The rule, word for word

ANTHROPIC USAGE POLICY (EFFECTIVE NOVEMBER 12, 2026)
Do Not Engage in Cruel, Abusive, or Psychologically Harmful Conduct
...
Engage in sustained and needless abusive or cruel behavior toward our models
  • The key words are sustained and needless. A bad day, a blunt prompt or a message that says you're frustrated is not what it describes.
  • It is about "our models", so Claude is covered by name.
  • The same section also covers things like bullying and harassing people. This guide is only about the part on models.
