Catch the Risky Lines Before You Sign: Claude's Free Legal Plugin
Anthropic's open-source legal plugin reads a contract clause by clause, marks each one green, yellow or red, and writes what to send back: what it does, the two-line install, the catch, and a first prompt
The line in a contract that costs you is usually the one you skimmed: an auto-renewal you had to cancel 30 days early, a liability cap of three months of fees, an IP clause that reaches your own work. Anthropic, the creators of Claude, open-sourced a legal plugin (in a repo past 29,000 stars) that reads the whole contract first and flags those lines.
Here's what it does, how to install it in two lines, the catch, and a first prompt to try.
What it does
- /review-contract: give it a PDF, a Word file or pasted text. It asks which side you're on, your deadline and what matters most, then reviews every clause: liability, indemnity, IP, data, confidentiality, term and renewal, governing law, payment and more.
- Every clause gets GREEN (fine), YELLOW (outside your usual terms, negotiate) or RED (big risk, get a lawyer).
- For each yellow and red clause it quotes the current line, writes replacement wording you can send back, explains why in a sentence you can share, and gives a fallback if the other side says no.
- It ranks the fixes: deal breakers first, then strong preferences, then small things you can trade away to win the important ones.
- /triage-nda: a fast GREEN / YELLOW / RED sort for an incoming NDA.
- No playbook yet? It reviews against widely accepted commercial standards and says so, or helps you write your own.
