Fake Sources in Your AI Paper? Catch Them With Academic Research Skills
Free Claude Code skills that check your references exist and say what you claim, then run a journal-style review with a devil's advocate. How to install them, the prompts to use, and the catch
Academic Research Skills is a free set of Claude Code skills for research papers (free for non-commercial use). Its integrity check makes Claude verify that every source you cite exists and supports what your paper says, before anyone reads it. Then a panel of Claude reviewers reviews the paper the way a journal would.
Here's why it matters, how to install it, what to ask, and the catch.
Why fake sources are a real problem
AI writing tools make up citations that look real: a plausible author, a real journal, a volume and page numbers, and no such article. A 2026 study of 111 million references counted at least 146,932 made-up citations in papers from 2025 alone.
On the repo's own sample paper, the check flagged 15 bad references out of 71 (wrong journals, invented DOIs, wrong pages), and 6 to 8 of them looked fully or partly made up.
