A loop is a prompt Claude Code re-runs on a timer. Each time it fires, even while you are away from the keyboard, Claude sends your whole chat again, and that comes out of your plan's limit. A loop you forgot about can keep doing it for a week.

Here's how to find your loops, stop them, and what to use instead of polling.

Step 1: see what is scheduled

  1. In the Claude Code session where you started the loop, type: what scheduled tasks do I have?
  2. Claude lists each task with its ID, schedule and prompt.
  3. Run /usage and look at the Loops row: it shows your heaviest scheduled tasks and how often each fires. Needs Claude Code 2.1.242 or later.
