ai-memory is a free, MIT-licensed tool with over 10,000 stars on GitHub. It records your coding sessions in the background, turns them into plain markdown pages, and gives the next session a handoff: where you left off, what failed, and what is still open.

Here's how to set it up, what to ask Claude, the catches, and three prompts to try today.

What it does

  • Quit Claude Code mid-task, come back later (or open Codex, Cursor or Gemini CLI in the same folder) and continue without re-explaining.
  • Memory lives in a small server you run, so the same project memory follows you from your desktop to your laptop.
  • The memory is a git-backed folder of ordinary .md files: open it in Obsidian, grep it or edit it by hand.
  • The default setup makes zero AI calls: capture, search and handoffs work with no API key, so saving costs no tokens.
