MCP Tasks are a new beta feature in Claude Code. A plugin (an MCP server) takes a long job such as deep research, the tool call returns as soon as the server accepts it, and Claude keeps working while the job runs. Your footer shows it as 1 MCP task.

Here's what you need, how to watch and stop a task, how to make Claude wait instead, and the catch.

What it does

  • The server runs the long job itself, so Claude is not blocked waiting for it.
  • The footer shows the running job, for example 1 MCP task.
  • When the job finishes, the result goes back to Claude. Ask Claude for it.
