Auto mode lets Claude Code run tools without asking you each time. A safety check reviews every call. On a very long chat, that check could not read the whole conversation, so it denied the calls and the agent got stuck.

Claude Code 2.1.302 changes that. Here is what is new, how to get it, and the catch.

What changed

  • With the server-side safety check, a chat that is too long is now compacted for the check, instead of every checked tool call being denied.
  • New setting CLAUDE_CODE_AUTO_MODE_MODEL picks the model the client-side check uses.
  • New Idle compaction row in /config turns idle compaction off or back on.
