When you hit your Claude usage limit in the middle of a task, you used to come back later and type continue. In Claude Code v2.1.234 and later, the session waits for you instead. It shows when your limit resets, then picks the task back up where it stopped. The docs say this is on by default for interactive sessions signed in with a Claude subscription.

Step 1: check it is on

  1. Update Claude Code, then run claude --version and make sure it says 2.1.234 or higher.
  2. Sign in with your Claude subscription (run /login if you use an API key; the wait is for claude.ai usage limits).
  3. Keep the session open when the limit hits. You should see: Usage limit reached · limit resets 3:45pm, and under it: Continuing automatically at 3:45pm · esc to cancel.
  4. To control it in your settings, look for the autoContinueAtUsageLimit setting (user or managed settings).
