Let Claude Paint Pixel Art From a Text File
claude-pxl is a free, MIT-licensed tool and Claude Code skill: Claude writes a short .px.js file and it builds PNGs, sprite sheets and animated GIFs, with a live browser viewer that replays the painting. Install steps, what to ask, and the catch
claude-pxl (the repo's own name is pxl) is pixel art as code. You write a compact .px.js file and get PNGs, sprite sheets with JSON, animated GIFs, and a live browser viewer that replays the painting step by step as you save. It ships as an agent skill, so Claude can write the file, build it, look at the preview and patch it.
What you get
- Draw: sprites from text grids, mirroring, auto-outline, recolors, shapes, gradients, dithering, tilemaps and a pixel font.
- Animate: frames as patches over a base sprite, exported as strips with JSON tags and GIFs.
- Export: PNGs, sprite sheets with TexturePacker-style JSON, and upscaled previews.
- Watch: pxl serve opens a viewer at http://127.0.0.1:4321/ that rebuilds on every save.
