A long Claude conversation is kept in a prompt cache so each new message does not reprocess everything. That cache lasts about an hour. Come back later and Claude has to read the whole chat again, which can use a real slice of your 5-hour usage limit on Pro and Max plans. Claude Code 2.1.304 added a warning for exactly that moment.

What the warning gives you

  • Resume anyway: you keep the full old conversation and pay to reread it.
  • Start a new conversation: Claude can look up the previous one if you refer to it.
