PhotoCraft is an open-source photo editor built from scratch in Rust to work like Photoshop. It has layers, masks, adjustment layers, live type and real PSD files, it has more than 66,000 stars on GitHub, and it is free under the MIT or Apache-2.0 license.

Here's what it can do, how to install it, how to let Claude drive it, and the catch.

What it is

  • A native desktop app for macOS, Windows, Linux and FreeBSD, plus a browser version. It runs on your own computer.
  • It opens, edits and saves layered PSD files. In the README's test, re-saving kept the look of 307 of 309 sample PSDs.
  • Every menu item, tool and dialog is one of 500+ commands, so the same command can be run from the app, a command line or an AI agent.
