You can download an AI model, load it in a desktop app, and chat with it on your own computer. LM Studio provides the interface. The model is a separate download. This guide takes you from installation to a checked local response without needing a terminal for the setup.

The video explores Qwen3.8-27B, then uses a smaller Qwen model for the working chat because of the recording computer’s memory limit. Follow that same decision process: choose a complete model your hardware can run, rather than downloading the largest name you recognize.

Before you download anything

  • Check compatibility. LM Studio’s current Mac requirements specify Apple silicon and macOS 14 or newer; Intel Macs are not supported. Windows and Linux have their own CPU and operating-system requirements.
  • Leave memory and storage headroom. A model file occupies disk space, and running it also consumes memory. A 16 GB computer cannot devote all 16 GB to model weights.
  • Stay online for installation, model downloads and any required runtime. Once those are installed, basic local chat can work offline.
