In the terminal, Claude can run 200 web searches in one session. Searches from its helper agents (subagents) count toward the same 200, so a big research job can use them all up before it finishes. When that happens, Claude is told to carry on with what it already found.

Step 1: update and check

  1. Run claude --version. On v2.1.290 or later, the search limit refills at about 100 searches an hour on its own.
  2. On an older version, update Claude Code first.
  3. Run a big research job. If searches start showing as calls that did nothing, you hit the limit. Wait for the refill, or use Step 2.
