The Claude Skill That Tidies Your Downloads Folder While You Sleep
A free Claude skill that opens every loose file in your Downloads at 2 AM, gives it a real name from what's inside, files it into clear folders and puts copies and old installers in one pile to check. It never deletes anything
Instead of digging through document (1).pdf, IMG_4471.jpg and final-final-v2.docx, you wake up to a Downloads folder where every file has a real name, like "Electric bill, Con Edison, Mar 2026.pdf", in a folder that makes sense.
It is one Claude skill (a folder with a text file Claude reads) and one line that runs it at 2 AM. Setup takes about five minutes, and it runs on your own Claude plan.
What it does every night
- Lists the loose files at the top of your Downloads folder (it skips anything still downloading and never touches folders you made).
- Opens each one and reads what is inside: PDFs, screenshots, photos, Word and Excel files, text and spreadsheets.
- Gives it a real name: what it is, who it is from, and the month, for example "Flight receipt, Delta, Austin to Denver, May 2026.pdf".
- Moves it into Downloads/Sorted: Bills and Receipts, Work, School, Personal, Photos, Screenshots, Documents, Music and Video.
- Puts exact copies and installers older than a week into one To check pile, so you decide what to delete.
- Writes a log of every move, so one sentence undoes the whole night.
Our test:40 messy files (bills, receipts, a lease, homework, screenshots, photos, installers and 4 copies) sorted in 82 seconds, 32 renamed into 9 folders, 8 in To check, nothing deleted.
What you need
- Claude Code, signed in with your Claude plan (no extra service or API key).
- A Mac or Linux computer that is on at 2 AM (or wakes up for it).
