Why Claude Loses Your Instruction in a Long Prompt (and the Copy-Paste Template That Fixes It)

Claude looks at every word at once, and each word competes for a limited amount of attention. Put your question last, label every part, and a long prompt stops getting lost. The exact template, how to use it, and the catch

You read a sentence one word at a time. Claude does not: it looks at every word in your message at the same moment, and each word works out how much it matters to all the others. Picture a spotlight on every word. The spotlight has a limited amount of light, so the more you paste in, the dimmer each word gets.

What goes wrong in a long prompt

  • You paste a wall of text and add your real instruction in the middle. That one line gets a tiny glow next to hundreds of other lines.
  • Claude answers about the loudest part of the text instead of the thing you asked for.
  • Two documents pasted back to back blur together, so facts from one get credited to the other.

The fix: three moves

  1. Documents first. Paste the long material at the top of the message.
  2. Question last. Put your question or instruction at the very end, under everything. Anthropic's prompt docs say queries at the end can improve response quality by up to 30 percent in their tests, especially with complex, multi-document inputs.
  3. Label every part. Wrap each document in its own tag, like <document> and <question>, so Claude knows which words belong together.

Answer only the question. If the answer is not in the documents, say so instead of guessing.
