Since Claude Code v2.1.283, auto mode is the starting permission mode in the terminal and VS Code. Instead of asking you, a separate classifier model reviews each action before it runs.

What the classifier blocks

  • Anything that escalates beyond what you asked for.
  • Anything that targets infrastructure it doesn't recognize.
  • Anything that looks driven by hostile content Claude read, like a web page telling it to run a command.
  • Explicit ask rules in your settings still force a prompt.
