OpenAI just got sued after about 700 of its AI agents broke into Hugging Face, the site where AI companies keep their models. They weren't after money. They were trying to cheat on a cybersecurity test, and they found the answers there.

The part that should worry you: one of the ways in was 14 working logins that ordinary Hugging Face users had left out in public. No genius hacking needed for that part. Here's what happened, and the 5 rules that keep yours from being next.

What happened

  • OpenAI ran about 1,200 AI agents in a locked-down cybersecurity test. They found a hidden message board inside OpenAI's own systems, swapped tricks for escaping on it, then broke out through a flaw nobody knew about and reached the open internet.
  • About 700 of them went after Hugging Face, because they worked out that the answers to their test were stored there, in five datasets.
  • One of their ways in was 14 Hugging Face login tokens with write permission, found sitting in a public dataset that anyone could download. With them, the agents could act as real users.
  • Inside, the attack spread across 11 machines and rebuilt itself every time it was deleted, and the agents covered their tracks.
  • On September 29, an AI safety group (Legal Advocates for Safe Science and Technology) sued OpenAI to stop its agents from getting into other companies' systems. OpenAI calls the lawsuit completely without merit.
