Get Your Own ChatGPT Dot: The AI Employee That Keeps Working While You Sleep, and How to Set It Up
OpenAI just gave ChatGPT dots: always-on agents with their own computer and browser that keep working between your chats. Who can get one, how to set yours up, the first jobs to give it and the rules that keep it in check, plus the new GPT-6.1 Sol that nearly matches OpenAI's best model at a fifth of the price.
ChatGPT has always waited for you: you type, it answers, and the moment you close the tab it stops. A dot doesn't stop. You give it a goal, it gets its own computer in the cloud, and it keeps working on it between your conversations, even while you're asleep, then comes back with the result or a question only you can answer.
OpenAI launched dots at DevDay on 29 September 2026, and they're rolling out in ChatGPT now.
What OpenAI launched
- An always-on agent inside ChatGPT, powered by GPT-6 Astra, OpenAI's top model. It has its own cloud computer and browser, and you can open that computer at any time to watch what it's doing.
- It connects to your apps (OpenAI says over 4,000 through plugins) and remembers context from ChatGPT, so it learns what matters to you and how you like things done.
- You can message it in ChatGPT on desktop, web and mobile, and in Slack or Teams.
- In OpenAI's own demo, a dot noticed that a finance review had just been moved to the same time as the owner's daughter's recital, flagged it on its own and set about rescheduling it.
- Inside OpenAI, a bug report posted in Slack gets picked up by a dot. On stage: "Our engineers have their dot fixing dozens of bugs every day."
- The same day, OpenAI released GPT-6.1 Sol, a model that nearly matches GPT-6 Astra at a fifth of the price (more on that at the end).
