The Fable 5 Guide: Effort, Memory and Self-Verification
Everything below is written for Claude Fable 5. The video promised big numbers. This is the honest version, pulled straight from Anthropic’s own Fable 5 docs, with the exact lines you can paste. Four fixes, and the blocks marked “From Anthropic” are quoted word for word.
Fable 5 is powerful, but it behaves differently from older models. It follows what you say very literally, it can quietly spend far more tokens than a task needs, and on long jobs it will sometimes report work as done that it never actually ran. These four fixes are the fastest way to fix all three. Each one comes with a copy-paste block.
The 4 fixes
Give it a goal, not a long list of steps.
Make it prove its own work, so “it’s done” actually means done.
Give it a memory file, so it stops relearning your setup every time.
Turn the effort dial to match the task, instead of paying full price for everything.
