Trigger Words, and How to Rephrase Around Them
The 5-second check that shows which model actually answered you, the words users report will get you quietly downgraded, and the rephrase patterns that keep you on Fable 5.
Quick context. Users have been posting logs showing a routing tag called TOO_DUMB_TO_NEED_FABLE, and reporting that certain harmless words quietly swap Claude Fable 5 for the older Opus 4.8. Important honesty note up front: this is based on circulating user reports, not confirmed Anthropic documentation. But the fix below is worth doing either way, because it is also just better prompting. More on that at the end.
Step 1The 5-second check
Before anything else, find out which model is actually answering you.
/status Then read the Model line in the output. Fable 5 = you're on the flagship. Opus 4.8 = your request was served by the older model.
In the claude.ai app, check the model picker at the top of the chat instead. If you selected Fable 5 and answers suddenly feel flatter on certain prompts, note the exact wording you used. That wording is your suspect.
