What Your Claude Plan Really Costs, and 3 Habits That Stop Claude Re-Reading Everything
A free tool prices every token in your Claude Code history at API rates. My $200 month came to about $4,500, and two-thirds of it was Claude re-reading the same conversation. The tool, and the three habits that cut it.
I wanted to know what my Claude subscription would cost if I paid for every single token. So I ran a free tool over my Claude Code history that prices each token at the real API rate. Last month I paid $200 for my plan. The same usage would have cost about $4,500 at API prices, over 22 times what I paid. My most expensive single day came to about $500 on its own.
The split was the surprise. Only about 11% of the bill was Claude actually writing anything. About two-thirds, roughly $3,000, was Claude re-reading the same conversation before every reply. That part you can cut, whether you pay per token or you are on a plan with usage limits.

Why Claude re-reads everything
Every time you send a message, Claude Code sends the entire chat so far: your messages, Claude's replies, every file it opened and every command output. Each tool Claude uses sends it all again with the new result on top. Prompt caching makes the repeated part cheaper (cached tokens are billed at a fraction of the normal input price), but it is still billed on every single turn, and the conversation only gets longer.
That is why re-reading can outweigh the writing so heavily. The writing happens once. The re-reading happens on every turn, and each turn carries everything that came before it.
