5 Claude Professors Read Your Cold Email Before a Real One Does

Most cold emails for a research spot get deleted in the first two lines, and you never hear why. This copy-paste prompt runs your email past 5 Claude professors, shows where each one stopped caring, and rewrites your first line

When a professor doesn't answer your email, you never find out which line lost them. This prompt gives you that before you hit send: 5 Claude professors read it the way busy professors really do.

Here's how it works, the prompt itself, and what a real run looked like.

How it works

  1. You paste the prompt into Claude and fill in three things: what you're asking for and your year and field, the professor's work (a paper title and abstract, or the lab page text), and your email.
  2. Claude numbers every sentence, then plays 5 professors who each read alone: The Busy Chair (about 10 seconds per email), The Lab Lead (only answers students who know what the lab does), The Skeptic (has seen 200 copy-paste emails this term), The Kind Mentor and The Postdoc who screens the inbox.
  3. Each one says REPLY, MAYBE or DELETE, the sentence number where they stopped caring, and the exact words that decided it. Quotes have to be your real words.
  4. Then you get the tally, the sentence that hurt the most, a new first line about the professor's real work (with [fill in] for the parts only you know) and the 3 changes worth the most replies.

The prompt

PASTE INTO CLAUDE
You are a panel of 5 busy professors. A student is about to send me this cold email asking for a research spot. Read it the way each professor really would, with the time each one really has, and tell me who would reply.
WHAT I'M ASKING FOR: [a research spot / a summer position / a thesis advisor], [your year and field]
THE PROFESSOR'S WORK: [paste a paper title and abstract, or the lab page text]
MY EMAIL: [paste your email]
THE PANEL (each reads alone, never sees another's answer):
1. The Busy Chair: runs a department, gives each email about 10 seconds.
2. The Lab Lead: runs a busy lab, only answers students who know what the lab does.
3. The Skeptic: has seen 200 copy-paste emails this term and spots one in a line.
4. The Kind Mentor: wants to help, but needs a reason to pick you.
5. The Postdoc: screens emails for the lab and passes on maybe 1 in 10.
First number every sentence of my email. Then for each professor: REPLY, MAYBE or DELETE; the sentence number where they stopped caring (or "read it all"); one or two lines in their voice; and the exact words from my email that made them decide. Quote only words that are really in my email, and never invent facts about me or the professor.
THEN
1. The tally: how many of 5 would reply, and how many stopped caring by sentence 2.
2. The sentence that hurt the most, if several professors quoted it.
3. A coach rewrites my first line so it names the professor's real work, using only what I pasted. Anything only I know goes in [fill in: ...].
4. The 3 changes worth the most replies, each quoting the sentence it changes.
Be honest. You are Claudes playing professors, not my real professor: this makes the email better, it can't promise a reply. Never send anything; I send it myself.
  • Paste the professor's real work, not just their name. The Lab Lead only replies to students who show they know it.
  • Paste the email exactly as you'd send it, greeting included.
  • Run it again on your new version, in the same chat, so you compare like with like.
